OTB Tournament Rules Basics – Touch-Move, Illegal Moves, and Simple Claims
Tournament rules can be detailed — but the good news is:
you only need a small set of basics to avoid 99% of problems.

🖐 Touch-Move (The Big One)
- If you deliberately touch one of your own pieces, you are expected to move it (if legal).
- If you touch an opponent piece, you may be expected to capture it (if legal).
- If you need to adjust a piece, say “I adjust” first, then adjust.
⚠ Illegal Moves
Handling varies by event and federation, but your safest mindset is:
make moves slowly and clearly when anything tactical or unusual is happening.
- Don’t rush castling / en passant / promotions.
- If you’re unsure, pause and check the board carefully.
👨⚖️ When to Call the Arbiter
- If there’s a disagreement about a rule
- If a clock or board issue occurs
- If you need a ruling and can’t resolve it calmly
Best practice: call the arbiter politely and explain the situation simply.
⏱ Clock-Related Basics
- Press the clock after completing your move.
- Don’t press while your hand is still on the piece.
- If the clock behaves strangely, call the arbiter.

✅ The “Avoid Disputes” Rule
- Move calmly and clearly
- Don’t touch pieces while thinking
- Use words like “I adjust” when needed
- If something feels messy, call the arbiter early
